About This Room Type
Stairway Design Ideas
Stairways are the most underutilized design opportunity in most homes. The staircase itself (treads, railings, lighting) and the space beneath it (wine storage, bar niches, reading nooks) both deserve intentional design.
Browse stairways with walnut treads, cable railings, and gallery walls alongside under-stair conversions into wine cellars, powder rooms, and bar nooks. Each project shows how circulation space becomes a focal point.

Stairway Design Tips
Treat the Stairwall as a Gallery
The wall along the staircase is the longest uninterrupted wall in most homes. A curated gallery arrangement of frames, sconces, and shelves turns a transition space into a visual journey between floors.
Match Treads to Your Main Flooring
If your main floor is oak, your stair treads should be the same oak species and stain. A tread material that does not match the adjacent floor creates an awkward visual break at the landing.
Light Each Landing Zone
A pendant or flush mount at the top landing, recessed step lights along the stringer, and a wall sconce at the bottom create three layers of light. Stairways are fall hazards in the dark and need dedicated lighting.
Use Under-Stair Space Intentionally
The triangular space beneath stairs fits a wine rack, a bar niche, a reading nook, or a pet station. Leaving it as a dark closet wastes the most creative dead space in your house.
Planning Guide
Stairway Planning Factors
Building Code Requirements
Stairs have specific code requirements: maximum 7.75-inch rise, minimum 10-inch run, 36-inch minimum width, and railings at 34-38 inches. Open risers must block a 4-inch sphere. We design within all local codes.
Railing Style Sets the Tone
Cable railings feel modern. Wrought iron feels traditional. Glass panels feel contemporary. The railing is the most visible element on a staircase and determines the overall design direction.
Noise Transfer Between Floors
Open staircases transmit sound between floors. If noise control matters, a carpeted tread or an enclosed stair wall reduces sound transfer significantly compared to hardwood treads with open risers.
Under-Stair Access Requirements
Before building a wine cellar or bar niche under the stairs, check the ceiling height at the deepest point (where it is tallest). You need at least 48 inches of usable height for seating and 36 inches for storage.
