Laundry Room Layout Tips
Build a Folding Counter Over the Machines
A countertop over front-loading washers and dryers creates the most useful folding surface in the house. Standard height is 36 inches, matching kitchen counter height. We specify the support brackets and countertop material.
Choose Stacked or Side-by-Side First
Stacked units free up floor space for a utility sink or storage. Side-by-side units allow a counter on top but need at least 5 feet of wall width. Your room width determines which layout works.
Put the Utility Sink Next to the Washer
A utility sink beside the washer lets you pre-treat stains without carrying wet clothes across the room. Connect both to the same drain line to simplify plumbing.
Install Upper Cabinets for Detergent Storage
Cabinets mounted 18 inches above the counter keep detergent, stain removers, and dryer sheets within reach but off the work surface. We specify standard 12-inch-deep wall cabinets for laundry rooms.
Planning Guide
Before You Start
Ventilation and Dryer Exhaust
Gas and electric dryers need an exhaust vent to the exterior. The vent run should be as short and straight as possible. We note vent routing in the floor plan so your contractor knows the path before installation.
Plumbing Access
Washer hookups (hot, cold, drain) determine where the machines go. Moving plumbing adds cost. We design around existing hookup locations whenever possible to keep the project on budget.
Flooring That Handles Water
Tile or luxury vinyl plank handles splashes and leaks better than hardwood or laminate. We recommend waterproof flooring for every laundry room and specify a floor drain if the layout allows it.
Noise Transfer to Adjacent Rooms
Spin cycles generate vibration that carries through walls. Anti-vibration pads under each machine reduce noise. If the laundry room shares a wall with a bedroom, we add soundproofing details to the specification.
