About This Room Type

Recreational Room Design Ideas

A recreational room serves as the informal gathering space where game tables, bar counters, and lounge seating share one layout. These projects show how to divide a room into activity zones without walls, keeping everything accessible and the space feeling open.

Browse completed projects featuring pool tables, bar areas, collector displays, and lounge seating. Each project includes a floor plan with clearance dimensions for game tables and traffic paths between zones.

Design Tips

Recreational Room Layout Tips

01

Size the Room Around the Largest Game

A standard pool table (4.5x9 feet) needs 5 feet of clearance on all sides for a full cue stroke. Measure from the table edge, not the center. This single requirement often determines the minimum room size.

02

Position the Bar Against a Wall

A bar counter against the longest wall keeps drinks and snacks accessible without disrupting game play. Include 42-inch-high bar seating on one side and working counter space on the back for a mini fridge and glassware.

03

Use Separate Lighting Zones

A pendant or billiard light directly over the pool table provides focused game lighting. The bar area gets its own accent lighting. The lounge zone uses dimmable sconces or lamps. Three zones, three light moods.

04

Add a Display or Trophy Wall

Collectors, hobbyists, and sports fans benefit from a dedicated wall with shelving, shadow boxes, or glass-front cases. We design these into the room so displays become part of the decor, not an afterthought.

Planning Guide

Before You Start

Ceiling Height for Cue Clearance

Pool and billiards need at least 8 feet of ceiling clearance so cues can be raised at steep angles. Pendant lights over the table should hang at 63 inches from the floor. We verify these clearances in the design.

Noise and Soundproofing

Game rooms generate noise from conversations, music, and game play. Acoustic panels, thick rugs, and upholstered furniture absorb sound and prevent it from traveling to bedrooms above or adjacent rooms.

Flooring That Handles Traffic

Luxury vinyl plank or polished concrete handles foot traffic, spills, and furniture weight. Carpet tiles are another option because they can be replaced individually if stained. We specify the flooring based on your activity mix.

Climate Control for Basements

Many recreational rooms are in basements where humidity and temperature fluctuate. A dehumidifier and dedicated HVAC zone keeps the space comfortable year-round and protects wood furniture and felt game surfaces.
