Pool Area Design Ideas
Pool area design goes beyond the pool itself. The surrounding cabana, lounge zones, decking material, and landscape create the resort feeling that makes a backyard worth using daily. These projects show how all the elements connect.
Browse Mediterranean cabanas, modern infinity edges, fire bowl features, and shaded lounge zones. Each project includes material specifications rated for outdoor use, chlorine exposure, and your climate zone.

Pool Area Design Tips
Zone the Wet and Dry Areas
A clear material transition (stone-to-wood, tile-to-grass) between the wet pool zone and dry lounge zone prevents the entire area from feeling like one wet surface. Guests instinctively know where to sit dry.
Choose Decking That Stays Cool
Dark-colored or unsealed concrete absorbs heat and burns bare feet. Travertine pavers, light-colored concrete, and composite decking in light tones stay 20-30 degrees cooler in direct sun.
Add Shade Before Lounge Furniture
Unshaded pool loungers are unusable from 11am to 4pm in summer. A pergola, cantilever umbrella, or cabana structure should be the first design decision, not an afterthought.
Include a Rinse Station
An outdoor shower near the pool keeps chlorine out of your home and off patio furniture. A stucco wall with a rainfall head doubles as a privacy screen and costs less than a full outdoor bathroom.
Planning Guide
Pool Area Planning Factors
Drainage and Grading
Pool areas create significant water runoff. Proper grading slopes water away from structures at a minimum 2% grade. Channel drains along hardscape edges prevent pooling near foundations.
Slip-Resistant Surfaces Are Required
Pool decking must be slip-resistant when wet. Honed (not polished) stone, textured concrete, and composite decking with grip profiles all meet safety standards. Avoid any polished surface within 6 feet of the pool.
Local Pool Codes and Fencing
Pool fencing height, gate latches, and electrical setbacks vary by municipality. We note code-relevant requirements in our design packages, but always verify with your local building department before construction.
