About This Room Type
Home Office Design Ideas
A productive home office is built around two things: your desk position relative to windows, and what appears behind you on camera. These projects solve both problems while keeping the room livable after work hours.
Browse dedicated office rooms, converted closets, bedroom-office combos, and shared family workspaces. Each project shows desk orientation, monitor placement, and storage solutions sized to real equipment.

Home Office Layout Tips
Face a Wall, Light From the Side
Position your desk so natural light comes from the left or right, not behind your monitor (glare) or behind you (silhouette on calls). Side lighting is the only orientation that works for both screen work and video.
Design Your Camera Background
The wall behind your desk is visible on every video call. A styled bookshelf, a piece of art, or a plant against a clean wall is more professional than a random bedroom doorway.
Route Cables Before Decorating
Monitor cables, chargers, and routers create visual clutter. We plan cable trays, desk grommets, and outlet placement in the floor plan so wires are hidden from day one.
Separate Work With a Visual Boundary
If your office shares space with a bedroom or living room, use a bookshelf, curtain, or rug edge to define the work zone. Without a boundary, work bleeds into rest and the room serves neither purpose well.
Planning Guide
Office Planning Factors
Monitor Setup Determines Desk Size
A single monitor needs 48 inches of desk width. Dual monitors need 60 inches minimum. An ultrawide needs 54 inches plus depth for a monitor arm. We size your desk to your actual equipment.
Acoustics for Calls and Focus
Hard walls and floors bounce sound. A rug, upholstered chair, and bookshelf with varied objects absorb echoes. We select materials that reduce call echo without adding acoustic panels to your walls.
Outlet and Circuit Capacity
A full desk setup (computer, monitors, printer, lamp, phone charger) draws significant power. We mark outlet locations in the floor plan and flag when a dedicated circuit may be needed.
Dual-Purpose Room Needs
If the office doubles as a guest room, the desk should fold, hide, or tuck into a built-in. We design convertible layouts where the office mode and guest mode both function fully.
