About This Design

Warm Transitional

We centered this design on a full-height natural stone fireplace column surrounded by vertical shiplap walls and floating oak shelves. The contrast between rough stacked stone, smooth white shiplap, and warm oak creates a layered focal wall that needs no other ornamentation.

Design Tip

Extend your fireplace surround material from floor to ceiling rather than stopping at the mantel to turn a fireplace into a true focal column. Flanking the stone with white shiplap frames it like a picture and draws the eye upward.

Spatial Approach

The seating group is centered on the stone column axis. Shelf bays sit symmetrically on each side within the shiplap. The vintage rug defines the seating zone boundary, and the furniture is pulled far enough from the firebox to allow comfortable use.

Best For

Homeowners who want a fireplace wall that reads as a major architectural statement rather than a furniture detail. Works for both new construction and renovation projects where one wall can be given a full material treatment.
