Pale blonde wood slat stair screen with large potted plants at the base

About This Design

Warm Japandi

We drew on the Japandi principle of finding beauty in natural materials left close to their raw state. Pale blonde wood slats enclose the staircase in a way that reads as both functional and sculptural. Living plants are integrated as design elements, adding organic softness to the precise geometry of the slat screen.

Design Tip

When using a slatted screen around a staircase, position plants at the base to soften the transition between the hard geometry and the floor. A tall species like a rubber plant draws the eye upward along the slats, reinforcing the vertical rhythm.

Spatial Approach

The slat screen runs floor to ceiling, enclosing the staircase on two sides and creating a natural threshold between the living zone and the dining area. The dining table is positioned just beyond the screen so the sightline passes through the slats, giving layered depth.

Best For

This design suits an open-plan ground floor where the staircase sits centrally and risks disrupting the room flow. The slat screen defines circulation without enclosing it, and the pale wood palette ensures the structure feels light.
