About This Design

Warm Scandinavian

This reception and play area is part of our work with WorkCastle in Austin, where parents work while their children attend preschool in the same building. We combined raw concrete, warm oak, and olive scalloped wainscoting to create a space that feels equally welcoming to adults and toddlers. A great team to collaborate with.

Design Tip

Use scalloped wainscoting in a muted green to define a child-scale zone without blocking sightlines. Carry the same wood tone into adult furnishings to unify two audiences in one room.

Spatial Approach

The play zone anchors the left wall with low shelving and a beanbag, while the reception desk sits right, angled to face entry traffic. A round table with wishbone chairs creates a parent lounge buffer between the two zones, and a glass partition connects to the adjacent space.

Best For

Designed for childcare centers, preschools, and hybrid coworking spaces seeking a Scandinavian reception and play area that parents and young children both feel comfortable in. The dual-purpose layout maximizes a compact footprint.
