Living Room Design Ideas
The living room sets the visual tone for your entire home. These projects solve the layout challenges that matter most: furniture scale for open plans, seating for families who actually use the room, and color palettes that work with your existing flooring.
Scroll through completed designs to see how fireplace walls, sectional placement, and rug sizing change based on room shape. Each project includes a floor plan with exact measurements.

Living Room Layout Tips
Size Your Rug to the Seating
Front legs of all seating should sit on the rug. An 8x10 works for most sofas with two chairs. Going smaller makes the room feel disconnected.
Float Furniture Off the Walls
Pulling your sofa 6-12 inches from the wall creates better proportion in rooms wider than 14 feet. It also opens a natural path behind the seating area.
Add a Second Light Layer
One ceiling fixture is not enough. A floor lamp behind the sofa plus a table lamp on a console eliminates shadows and makes evening use comfortable.
Anchor With the Longest Wall
Place your largest piece (sofa or sectional) against the longest wall first. Everything else orients from there. This prevents the trial-and-error of moving heavy furniture.
Planning Guide
Before You Start
Open Plan or Enclosed
Open-plan living rooms need defined zones using rugs and lighting. Enclosed rooms have more wall space for storage and art. The layout strategy is completely different.
TV Placement and Glare
Windows opposite your TV cause daytime glare. We position screens and plan window treatments so both natural light and media work together.
Kid and Pet Durability
Performance fabrics like Crypton and Revolution look like linen but resist stains. We specify these for families so the room stays practical and photogenic.
Fireplace as Focal Point
A fireplace wall competes with a TV for attention. We resolve this by stacking, offsetting, or using built-in cabinetry to give both elements visual balance.
