About This Design
Country Cottage
This cottage garden design proves that landscaping makes the architecture. We designed a covered porch deep enough for seating and dining, then framed it with lavender, grasses, and naturalized plantings that bloom in succession. The white cottage recedes into the greenery rather than dominating it, creating that collected-over-time feeling that makes cottages so appealing. The approach is deliberately informal and abundant.
Design Tip
Plant in layers and drifts, not rows. Mass the same plant in groups of five or seven, layer heights from ground covers to shrubs to trees, and choose varieties that bloom at different times for year-round interest.
