Vertical oak slat panel framing a white plaster fireplace

About This Design

Organic Modern

We centered this living room on a vertical oak slat panel that runs floor to ceiling, framing a white plaster fireplace as the focal point. Open shelving on both flanking sides sits on the same white plaster wall, keeping the shelves light and airy. Sconces at mantle height provide warm accent light, and a black ceiling fan ties into the darker tones of the gray accent chairs below.

Design Tip

Use a vertical slat panel as a framing device rather than covering the entire fireplace wall. Centering the slats directly behind the fireplace keeps the plaster surround visible on both sides and lets the wood texture read as an art installation rather than cladding.

Spatial Approach

The oak slat panel occupies the center third of the fireplace wall, extending from baseboard to ceiling. White open shelving units sit flush against the plaster on both sides, aligned with the slat panel edges to create a symmetrical triptych composition. Gray accent chairs face the fireplace on a patterned rug with the white sofa set back on the opposite axis, allowing clear sightlines to the feature wall from all seating positions.

Best For

Living rooms where a strong textural focal point is needed without committing to dark cabinetry or heavy wood built-ins. The vertical slat panel suits open-plan spaces where the fireplace wall must read clearly from a distance, as the vertical lines and warm oak tone create presence even in a large room.
